Colchester Council came to us with an established brand for their initiative, which aims to get the people of Colchester cycling.

Supporting local

The team wanted to showcase their brand in a more balanced and accessible way. The site needed to appeal to all age groups and spark an interest in cycling.

For many clients, providing original content often poses a challenge, and so we were delighted that Cycle Colchester were able to provide some images of residents cycling in the community. We interspersed these images with illustrations of cyclists.

Peddling a cause close to home

We were delighted to win the tender for this project. From our studio in the centre of the city, we witnessed first-hand the development that has gone into Colchester’s cycling infrastructure of the past decade.

Exhaust fumes are the main source of Colchester’s air pollution (source: Colchester Council). The positive environmental and social impact on Colchester of this project was really appealing to us, as it aligned perfectly with our We Care ethos.

The important stuff

The site needed to appear to all age groups and spark interest in cycling. Whilst Cycle Colchester wanted to use their existing brand, its application on the website needed to be rethought, with accessibility and user experience at the forefront from day one.

Take a look at the features we introduced to ensure the site met the cycling needs of the people of Colchester.

Accessibility

To ensure no rider was left behind, we built the website to WCAG 2.o guidelines. To find out more about how we make websites accessible, check out the accessibility category in our knowledge hub.

Signposting

The website needed to serve as a hub to Colchester’s cycling community. We achieved this by using the homepage as a signposting page to direct users to useful information is a clear format.

The Bike Maintenance page lists local bike shops and Colchester’s “bike kitchens” – community workshops run by volunteer mechanics to keep you on the road.

Community

The community area of the site aims to bring the cyclists of Colchester together. With a busy calendar of useful events, a directory of local cycling groups and stories from the city’s cyclists, the site showcases Colchester’s vibrant cycling community.

Support

The website doesn’t shy away from the barriers that Colchester residents face when they want to get out on their bikes. The reporting an issue page shows users where to report potholes, contact their councillor and inform the police about bike theft.

This Is Fever have been amazing to work with on redeveloping the Cycle Colchester website and we are really happy with the finished product. They were very flexible with including community feedback into the design and delivered the project to a tight timeframe. Everyone in the team is super friendly and always happy to help.
